    Anyone canning?

It's very easy! There are different ways to do it, but I just bundle my herbs, then I hang them upside down in the basement until they're dry enough to strip and package. They're usually ready within a week or two. You should try it.

    Harvest blues

Wow, you guys have been giving me some good suggestions. I felt a little foolish for bringing it up because it seems like such a small thing to complain about. Thank you all for caring enough to offer tips. I hope we can all get over our blues a little easier this time around.

    Harvest blues

This happens to me every year. Once my garden starts winding down and I begin preserving the last of the harvest, I get a little sad. I have a small fall garden for personal use, and I've planted some mums, but that will only get me through November. I love being outside in my garden so much...

Please post your intruduction in this forum!

Great idea for an intro thread, @MC! My husband, kids, and I are urban homesteaders. We live in a large city, and we do have neighbors, but we have a few acres of land that go behind our house. That's where we grow our fruits and vegetables. We also have hens and goats. I market our fresh...

    Setting up stand for EBT

Oh, yes, I didn't think of that. You're probably right about the location playing a part in whether SNAP is used or not. I wonder if SNAP users are more likely to visit a farm stand than a farmers market too. I could see that being a contributing factor as well.

    Hot air balloons

No, I'm afraid of heights and wouldn't be able to handle it. You are so brave! I bet you get some lovely views while up in the sky.

    Back to virtual schooling?

The local schools here might shutter again because too many students have caught the virus, some of which needed to be hospitalized. Schools have just started up around the US. Do you think we're headed for another year of virtual schooling nationwide until the vaccine can be approved for all...

    Setting up stand for EBT

It might take some time to get approval because I bet there's a backlog due to the pandemic. I accept SNAP at the farmers market, but only a handful of customers have paid with SNAP. Just keep in mind that it might not be worth the fuss.

    So hot, flowers are screaming

I had to move some of my flower pots around in order to keep them from fainting in the summer heat. Even the daises have had enough. I hope we get some relief soon.

    Thrifty pet care tips

My dogs have been going bonkers for ice cube hockey. I dump some ice cubes on the carport and the dogs chase and bat them around. The ice helps cool them down too. @MartyR, it wasn't worth it to me because my pets rarely need anything beyond their yearly vaccinations and checkup. Whether...

    Anyone canning?

I haven't started yet because I simply can't bear to make the house hotter than it already is. I've been hanging spices to dry out, but that's about it.

    Farmland selling high

What do you think is the main driver behind record setting sales such as this one? If I owned a large farm, I'd be tempted to put it up for sale and see what happens.

    Buy with no registration?

Would you consider buying an animal that had no registration papers? How much less would you expect the animal to cost than its counterpart that is fully registered?

    New hens with no rooster

If I remember correctly, you turn the hens out during the day, but their range is limited by fencing. I have a friend who takes in older hens, and she said that the ones who used to have a rooster in the flock can be a bit careless because they're used to the rooster warning them of danger...

8 acres of farmland, worth planting crops for hobby farming?

You could look into joining or starting a CSA as a mechanism for moving your produce. It's worked out well for me. I think you'd better make sure that you can get the proper permits before you plant anything. Some cities/counties have a backlog due to COVID. By the way, welcome to the group...
