  1. Freshwater pond

That's what I was going to suggest as well. They survive well together with little fuss and both are versatile when it comes to cooking them up.
  2. burning my grass and planting lettuce with a push seeder, pictures of pests, looking for advice

Hello, @LettuceHead, welcome to the forum. What's the big appeal about the Paperpot machine? Maybe you can get those same benefits another way. I wish you lots of success with your first crop!
  3. Rising feed prices

@GrowPro, it really depends on what type of livestock you have and what kind of operation you're running. Environmental changes can affect the nutritional value of pastureland. Plus, even if your turnover is quick, you'll still need to get your breeding stock through the winter. Most of the...
  4. When choosing a fertilizer

I use composted manure from my animals and that seems to be enough for us. I try to rotate my fields so that there's a nitrogen-fixing crop every few years which seems to help as well.
  5. Service light on

Hey there, Brenda! Welcome to the forum. I can't tell what type of machinery you're showing here. It's a clear picture, but it doesn't show us much like the make and model. In my experience, though, it's not usually a big issue when the service light comes on, no matter the machine. So, if...
  6. Milk or Beef?

I think it is less expensive to raise beef cattle. They won't require all the specialized equipment that you'd need to start a dairy operation.
  7. Any babies?

Got any piglets, chicks, ducklings, lambs, or other farm babies? How is it going for you guys so far? My rooster is the proud father of a few chicks this year. One was picked off by a hawk, unfortunately, but I haven't lost any others. You?
  8. To hill or not

It depends on the vegetable for me. I have done things a little differently this year. In order to preserve water, I planted some of my thirstiest fruits and vegetables in what I call the valley. I hope it doesn't backfire on me. I still mounded some vegetables.
  9. Benefits of edger?

My guess is that your brother-in-law probably just bought one and loves it, so he's just sharing that enthusiasm with everyone else. He probably thinks it will make your life easier. A weed eater is more versatile, in my opinion.
  10. Keeping sensitive equipment from overheating?

Do you guys have any tips for keeping sensitive farm equipment cool while out in the hot, boiling sun? It's been unusually hot here with no clouds in sight. It's having a real effect on not only my computer equipment, but on some of my machines too.
  11. Cows getting out

I don't raise cattle, but my parents always had them, and sometimes we'd have a few get loose. It sounds like your neighbor must've had a problem with their fence. If the cattle were spooked, I doubt they'd be milling around in the neighbor's front yard.
  12. Favorite Season

Fall and spring are my favorite seasons. I work in construction and appreciate the milder seasons. Summer gets sizzling hot and the winter snow wrecks havoc with some projects.
  13. Off the grill

Grilled bananas. They weren't pretty, but it was a good dessert. Much better than I expected. I believe they used lemon juice, honey, and brown sugar to make the dessert.
  14. Livestock calculator

Look up some of the universities in your state. Find the ag department on their website and you should find a wealth of information. Here is a good example from Iowa State University.
  15. Dealing with wind

I didn't mean to sound so dismissive, @Henderson. We're a young couple and still getting established, so I was looking at it as taking on an expense that might not be necessary and projecting our situation onto yours. I understand what you mean about taking precautions. I work away from...
  16. Best Performing Garden Plant

Squash always performs the best for us. I'm not even that fond of it. It's just one of those things you plant, because even if every other vegetable is a wash, you know that those squash plants will pull through.
  17. Never take for granted again?

I know that we haven't completely eradicated the virus, but it's safe enough that the COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions have changed. Public swimming pools are even opening up in some places this summer and some kids are back at school. Well, last night, I fired up the grill and my wife and...
  18. Anyone else like this?

Our yard isn't that special. I don't think house is something you'd find in a magazine spread either though. I guess they're a matched set.
  19. Raccoon getting flowers

Wow, that's something I haven't heard of before. I had no idea that they ate flowers. Is there anything those little bandits won't go for? Jeez. To answer your question (finally),I've always found that stirring up the dogs will get the coons moving right along.
  20. Dealing with wind

If those strong winds were a fluke, then I'd probably let it go rather than waste time on fixing something that is unlikely to be a problem in the future. If the corn isn't salvageable, feed it to your livestock so it's not a total loss. You probably already thought of that though.
