Your question made me realize that I've had an incredibly bland year really. I didn't add the peacocks and I think that was a smart decision, but other than that, everything has been pretty steady.
Add me to the strange list. All creatures big and small get something new and special on Christmas. It's all part of the celebration.
@leon That is tough, especially this year with COVID-19 still going around. I imagine most farmers will be staying at home. Probably too afraid to hire...
Contact your local extension! Those folks have a ton of information that will apply to your area and if they don't know the answer, they'll be able to put you in contact with those who do. They're usually super helpful.
We've bought some solar generators, and they were pretty pricey. I'd love to buy some more solar equipment, but with the coronavirus pandemic, I'm afraid to spend a lot of money.
I'm more worried about Christmas because we usually keep Thanksgiving pretty low-key since I open the shop for Black Friday. I'm not going to open it this year, so as not to encourage a large group at once, but we're still keeping the day pretty low-key at home. I'll make the usual...
I began making antibacterial wipes and hand sanitizer when the stores began running out. Customers kept asking where I got mine, so I started selling them in the store. Through A and B pricing, I noticed that the wipes and sanitizer only sold when I priced them higher than the average amount...
That's interesting, Katie. Thanks for sharing. The way you described things makes sense. I think swans are beautiful creatures, but I've heard they have to stick in pairs, or they'll wind up fighting and will seriously damage each other.
I know I feel awful when the air pressure, humidity level, and temperature start shifting suddenly. It does something to my sinuses. I haven't noticed any problems with my chickens or goats though.
I combine sea salt, thyme, cayenne pepper, and fennel which makes my favorite french fry seasoning. It probably sounds like a weird combination, but I can't get enough of the stuff. I add oregano to garlic powder to make my version of Italian bread.
It somewhat depends on the seeds, but for the most part you should store them away from the sunlight, in a dry container, and in a cool place. The basement is great for storing seeds. I've read that you shouldn't use paper envelopes, but I do it all the time and have never had any problems.
Heck yeah, I use my leaves! They are the perfect brown/carbon matter to balance out the compost bin. I even pile some to the side and will slowly add them during the spring when I have tons of greens/nitrogen to compost and not enough browns/carbon. I also chop some of them up with my...
Alright, I dig this lighthearted discussion about the election, it's a nice change. But no, I can't see myself jumping into the drug industry. I imagine there are already tons of marijuana growers since it's been legalized in some states for a while now. That's too much competition to jump...
I've never tested my soil. I just haven't had a reason to do so. Adding lime helps when laying sod or sowing grass seeds. Adding crushed eggshells to the soil increases the soil's calcium level over time.
Didn't we already make the leap years ago? Mechanization seems so common that I'm not sure that it's reversible. Robotics and automation are the next big thing I suppose, but there's also been a resurgence in backyard gardens and homesteading, so perhaps it balances out. What do you think?
I've noticed that many people here claim to free-range poultry. I thought I did too, but after reading an article about it, I'm starting to wonder if I should call my method something else. It looks like it mostly boils down to fencing. So, if you let your birds out of their run for a good...
My cats get Revolution and my dogs get Heartguard Plus as their preventative most months. I usually skip December-February though since mosquitos (heartworms) aren't out then. I dose our livestock now and then.
I usually follow the recipe, but it's nice to know what I can use in a pinch when I've already started and realize I'm missing a key ingredient. I've used crackers for my breading in a pinch before.
It's possible to farm in Alaska. I wouldn't have thought so - at least not without a greenhouse, supplemental lighting, or some other assist - but I worked with a couple who used to make it their livelihood. They owned a good-sized farm outside of Anchorage. It stays daylight for most of the...
Farmallh, I think some folks might've read more into it than what it is. It doesn't sound like your property is being used to host a party at all. It's just going to be decorated for Halloween. The storage aspect will add to the creepiness factor. I'm picturing more of a hayride thing through...
