Would you have to purchase a farm? I don't think you're too old to start but you do need money. If you're buying things and starting from scratch, you will need a hefty amount of money or great credit.
My parents swear they have had robins in their yard for over a week. We have a lot of snow still at our house and no robin sighting. Robins to me mean spring is right around the corner. Have you seen robins?
Now that sounds like my cat! Spoiled as she can be. It's my fault though because I made her this way. Our barn cats are just happy for attention and any food.
We hired a 15 year old neighbor kid to help us. It worked out wonderful. I think you can get your working papers and work on a farm earlier than 16. I hope you are able to find some help.
My wife grows aloe vera and many other plants. I think that is the only really medicinal one. She did mention that she was going to try new things this growing season.
This was pretty interesting. I do till and can't imagine planting all that we do without tilling. I think it would be too hard and honestly I think we don't have the right soil.
What are your thoughts on raising Buffalo? I've had some people ask if we do but we don't. Anyone here raise Buffalo? How much different is it than raising cattle?
I'm cooking dinner tonight, giving my wife the night off. Actually my parents took the children for the night. So we are staying in, I'm cooking and then we will watch a movie.
Are you planning on growing it from seed or plants? We have a couple of asparagus plots on our land. We don't sell it, we grow enough to eat. I'll be honest and say that we don't always get a good crop each year.
Honestly we try to have babies (calves, piglets) in the spring. I think the winter months are just too cold for them. Spring is busy but it seems to work the best here.
I know nothing of wine and grapes but I look forward to your posts to learn more. I do like to go wine tasting and it's always busy so that would be a great market! Good luck!
We breed too, we have a neighbor that has a couple of good bulls. We don't tend on owning any bulls. I never went the route of artificial insemination. I guess if the breeding didn't work, we would.
This is a great question. Are you saying that you up and moved your livestock to a new state? Or did you just get new livestock from a different state? I would love to hear what other people say.
I would have thought it was a great time to sell your trees. I was thinking of having our woods logged but maybe I'll wait. I was surprised that logging companies do this in the winter.
We have been getting dumped on with snow over the last few days. I've got a couple of finicky cows. They are showing their distaste of the snow on the ground. They are kept in the barn but do go outside often throughout the day. Anyone else have finicky cows?
I really don't think this is much different than what was happening during the Trump administration. I think it is great all the same. Anything that can help farmers or anyone in this pandemic is a good thing.
I worked for a couple of vineyards when I was in school. It was very hard work! There was so much to do and learn. I loved eating them too. What variety are you growing?
It's a high of 8 degrees today. It sure was chilly doing chores this morning. My wife decided it was a great day to make soup. She made a batch of chili, potato and corn chowder and a beef stew this morning (for lunches this week). She also made homemade chicken soup and chicken and biscuits for...
The neighboor kids were feeding the cows apples today. It was fun watching the littles interact with the cows. They were handing out apples, the cows were eating out of their hands. A couple of times you could hear the real little ones say gross when the cows tongue came out.
