My dog is afraid of the sound of thunderstorms

Thunderstorms commonly make dogs nervous. Have you tried a ThunderShirt? It's kind of like swaddling for dogs - the compression of the vest calms them. It might be worth a try. I have friends who say that they've helped their dogs.

    Repelling Mosquitoes with Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is great for repelling mosquitoes, and I just love the way it smells! Catnip is also great at repelling mosquitoes. A study even found that it is 10 times more effective than DEET! And, if you have a cat, he or she will be thrilled if you plant some.

    Wilson Super B Grain Trailers

I went to their website, and there are listings for people selling new trailers in the United States. I saw some available in Iowa, Indiana, Montana, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, and South Dekota.

    Horses getting replaced by machines

I don't personally know anyone who still uses horses on the farm for working purposes. I do have a couple of friends who have a couple of horses for riding. Technology has certainly changed the way we farm over the past few decades and it will continue to change how we farm going forward.

    Emergency Planning

I will admit that I do not currently have a plan. COVID-19 has prompted me to start thinking about what I want to happen to my farm and animals if something happens to me, though. I really need to sit down and get something official written up.

    Avocado outlook strong

Yes, that is good news for avocado growers. I have never tired to grow avocados myself, but I really enjoy using them in various dishes. I really love making my own guacamole.

    What Time Is Dinner?

We try to eat around 6pm, too. This allows the kids to do extracurricular activities during the school year. We make it a point to gather for dinner each night. I hope we can continue to be successful at family dinners as the kids get older.

    Burning endless kid energy

An obstacle course is a cool idea! I'll have to try that one. I usually just send the kids outside to play. I try to play with them as much as I can, but they are pretty decent at entertaining themselves if I have to do some work.

Those who live in Oregon may be interested in this. The Oregon Farm Bureau is looking for photos for its 2021 calendar. They are accepting photos of anything related to farming. If your photo is accepted to appear in their calendar, it would be great exposure for you and your farm. Here's the...

    Mixing It Up

I've never grown watermelons before, but I really love eating them in the summertime, so I decided I'd try to grow some this year. I hope they do well.

    Looking for ideas on Pinterest

You can find some really cool stuff on Pinterest! I've found some great gardening tips and new recipes to try there. A lot of phones have good cameras these days. You could take some photos with your phone and see how they turn out. I'm sure folks would love to see what you're doing with your...

    Family or First-Generation Farmers?

My parents and grandparents were farmers, so it seemed like a natural thing for me to do - to become a farmer myself. Does your family farm or are you a first-generation farmer? I was just wondering how many of us grew up with this lifestyle versus how many of us chose this lifestyle when we...

    Go-to flowers to deter pests

Garlic is actually useful for repelling many types of bugs. Garlic can repel carrot root flies, root maggots, coddling moths, and Japanese beetles. It may sound a bit odd, but you can plant garlic near your roses to keep aphids from eating them.

    Inventory management

I usually keep track of things myself. I would also double check another person's work, so I figure if I'm going to spend the time double-checking, I might as well just do it myself. Sometimes I wish I could entrust the job to another person, though.

    Teaching others to farm

That makes sense. You get into your own routine, and you don't really think about how you do things anymore. Becoming aware of what you're doing might give you a chance to evaluate your own practices to see if there are different or new ways you'd like to approach farming.

    Farm Animals for Business Meetings?

I just learned about what Sweet Farms is doing right now. They are raising funds for their rescue efforts by "lending" out animals for business calls and happy hours. For a fee, you can have a farm animal like a turkey, cow, llama, sheep, pig, or goat, join your business call or video happy...

Keeping Rabbits Out of the Garden

I love rabbits, but I'd like to keep them out of my garden this year. How can I effectively keep them out without causing them any harm? Last year, this was a real problem for me.

How To Get Rid Of Skunk Smell In Garage

Try bleach. Dilute it with water in a spray bottle, and spray it wherever the skunk sprayed. You'll want to test it out on a small spot on your floor first if you're worried about it causing discoloration. You'll also want to keep the spray away from furniture. Let the bleach spray sit for a...

    Hedging your bets?

We try to do a few things to make income so that if one thing doesn't pan out one year, we won't be at a total loss. I think this is probably harder for larger farms to do. They usually have one major crop or one type of livestock they specialize in.

Chicks, ducklings, and bunnies as Easter gifts

That's a hard one because I am sure there are people out there who buy these baby animals and actually keep them and raise them. However, there are also people out there who just get rid of the animals after the holiday or when they grow up, and that is heartbreaking. If only there were a way to...
