    Weather Apps

I use Dark Sky. It does more than just list the temperature. It also lists a "feels like," wind speed, chance of precipitation, and so on. It does cost $4 when you first download it, but I think it's worth the cost.

    Deere Is Downsizing

Oh no, that's not good news for their employees. We have a John Deere tractor. It's been a brand we've used and trusted as a family for decades. I can't imagine them ever going out of business.

    Homeschooling And Helping Out

Our kids attend a public school, but we have considered homeschooling them. We feel it's important for them to socialize with their peers, though, so we chose to keep them in public school. They do have a couple of small daily chores and are expected to help out more on the weekends. We try to...

    New Calf Arriving Soon

We have a pregnant cow who should be giving birth soon. This will be our first time caring for a calf. Do you all have any words of wisdom? I see that if it's really cold out, some farmers will actually bring a calf into their home for a day or two so he/she doesn't get frostbite. Has anyone...

Farm Shows National Farm Machinery Show 2020

We wouldn't miss it! I can't wait to see what's new this year. We often see old friends and make new ones there, too. Sometimes we find folks who don't mind sharing what they've learned through their experiences with us. We believe sharing knowledge is essential; farming is difficult, and we...

Which animals are best suited for a small farm?

We have a couple of barn cats that help keep the mice away around here. Chickens are surprisingly easy to raise. We were not expecting them to be so easy to care for when we first got ours.

    Dream Crop?

Here in Kentucky, we grow peas and broccoli on our farm. But I would absolutely love if we could grow cocoa beans! What crops do you currently grow, and what crop/s would you like to grow but just don't have the right conditions for, whether it be the wrong type of soil, wrong climate...

    Real Vs. Fake Christmas Trees

We have always had an artificial tree. We buy a spray to make it smell like a real pine tree, but I'm sure the smell is nothing compared to what a real pine tree smells like. I love the smell of pine.

    Growing Herbs

We don't have an herb garden, but we grow a few herbs in pots in our home. We grow thyme, parsley, oregano, and basil because they're easy to grow inside.

    Extreme Weather

Whenever I know it's going to be cold out, I herd our cows into the barn. I give them some extra food because I know a body trying to stay warm needs more calories. I also provide them with a lot of warm bedding they can use to help them stay warm on those cold days and nights.

Trucks & Trailers Gator or Mule - Which is Better?

I'm trying to decide what type of farm vehicle to get in the upcoming year. We could really use one. Oftentimes, my wife or kids will come out to the barns or to the field with me, so I need a vehicle that will transport two to four people easily. I was looking into getting a Gator or a Mule...

    Freeze branding

Studies indicate that freeze branding is less painful than hot branding, but I'm sure it's still very painful. I'd say freeze branding is the more humane way to mark your cattle, but I wouldn't personally brand my livestock. I use ear tattoos. Is there a reason you need to be able to identify...

    Thanksgiving plans?

We had my parents over for a big dinner. We went for a walk before dinner and set up our Christmas tree afterward. I think everyone had a good time. I know I did.

Farm Shows Fort Wayne Farm Expo

Do you all go to farm shows? There's one in Fort Wayne, IN January 14-16 I plan on attending. Since it's a bit of a drive, I'll be staying in a hotel so I can take advantage of the educational seminars I want to attend. I'm looking forward to it. It should be both educational and fun!
