  1. Setting up stand for EBT

You must live in a pretty wealthy area then. I think that's a good point to bring up though. Whether it's worth the hassle might depend on where you live and how you sell.
  2. Pay what you want?

Does the pay what you want pricing strategy ever work out reasonably? My wife and I are considering it for our farm stand. We will shut down in October, so we'd have a little less than two months to try it. What do you think? I think it's a good idea. Since our customers already know what we...
  3. Worms in our tomatoes

I believe you're talking about tomato fruitworms. They're incredibly common, unfortunately. It's really a caterpillar that will turn into a moth. They lay their eggs on the leaves, and once they hatch, the larva burrows on in. You can use neem oil as an organic method to try and control the...
  4. Homemade hash

We like it from the can too. I think they sell some that has less salt in it. If not, maybe you could make it a little healthier by adding onions and tomatoes to the mix.
  5. Trouble getting supplies?

April 2022? Wow! I'm glad to know that it's not just me, because I was beginning to think I must be going crazy, but I hate to hear that you need to get on a waiting list in order to score that plow. That's just ridiculous.
  6. Opinions on alfalfa stand management

It's just myself and two of my neighbors that rely on it in order to feed our goats and chickens, and we all settled on me keeping it going while it's productive. If I sold a bunch of hay, or we had more livestock between us, I'd probably do things differently.
  7. Trouble getting supplies?

Is anyone else having trouble getting livestock supplies in a timely manner? I've noticed that the feed store carries fewer options than it did before the pandemic started, and sometimes I walk in and see bare shelves. When I order supplies online they are often late due to shipping delays.
  8. Please post your intruduction in this forum!

This was a good idea, @MC. I'm Martin, but I go by Marty because it's obviously way cooler. My wife and I both work day jobs for the steady pay and benefits, but our heart and soul is in the land. We have a farm stand that we run on Thursdays and on the weekends. We grow and preserve most of...
  9. Lumber still king

Things seem to be going great for the tree farmers out there as the price of lumber is continuing to soar. How long do you guys think it will last? Is lumber a hard industry to break into as a farmer?
  10. Old tractors

I like seeing them myself, although I do agree that they are kind of sad. I can't say that I have any to spare for the purpose of having a lawn ornament. My tractor is still getting plenty of work. It's a good thing it's not a field hand, or I'd go broke paying for its labor.
  11. Thrifty pet care tips

My thrifty tip is to save mismatched socks to make a dog toy. Take one sock, hide some treats inside, tie the end in a knot, then cut small holes out of the sides. Let the dog shake the sock to release the treats. It might take them a minute to work it out, but I've never found a dog that...
  12. Buy with no registration?

Yeah, I see nothing wrong with buying unregistered livestock. I don't breed pedigree livestock for sale, so I see no reason to worry about registration unless required.
  13. Drill with rechargeable battery

Wait a minute...you're saying that you used the same rechargeable battery for over a decade and it never degraded? If so, then you really should've stocked up when you had the chance!
  14. Fall crops

I'll eventually plant some cabbage, mustard greens, and radicchio. I probably need to plant some alfalfa. We've been so busy that my wife and I haven't talked about it yet, so thanks for the reminder to get on that.
  15. Bone spurs, plantar fasciitis

I've had plantar fasciitis off and on, but it isn't too bad for me pain wise. I just do some stretches and my feet feel better eventually. I hope you find some relief soon, OP!
  16. Harrow for ATV

I'm with @Nora suggestion wise. They're also called chain harrows, if you want to price check for the best price. Field Tuff makes a good one that's affordable and easy to attach.
  17. Automation systems

I've tried automating their feeding schedule, but that led to a ton of waste, so I stopped. I know other farmers who have done well with it though. @The Big Cowhuna, have you thought about using a drone to check on your herd? I know that's not something you can automate, but it would still...
  18. Keeping cool

It isn't as bad here because the humidity isn't high, but I suppose it depends on what they're used to. I raise heritage breeds that are hardy and adapt easily. We just try to keep cool water around for them.
  19. Mobile butchers

I thought I had a clever business idea to start up a mobile butchering and processing service. I was afraid it might be too niche and expensive to do, so I never bothered to check into it further. Well, it turns out that it's already a thing and has been for some time. Have you ever used a...
  20. Loofah sponges

Am I the only one who thought loofah sponges were a product of the sea? I'm working away from home and there happens to be another farmer on the crew who grows loofah gourds. Yep, loofah sponges are derived from a gourd. My wife loves those things. It's too late to grow some this year, but...
