Wylie: Peripheral speed will remain the same. Theory behind this is that removing 1_2 of the bars allows more space for vines to get between the cylinder bars. This provides a cushion for the beans keeping them away from steel components and avoiding cracks and splits. Usually, pods will thresh out against the vines. Also, vines will usually feed in better from the feeder beater, and not be torn up as badly, removing some shoe load and preventing plugging of walker openings. This is normally done only when straight cutting--the vines in dried down windrows usually break up into pieces which are too small to be fed without 8 bars installed. In order to do this, cylinder bars need to be in very good shape--reasonably good leading side and corners, and the center arch needs to be near full height. Hope this is clear.
