Combines 1 machine worn more than other

Absolutely they can. No two machines are excactly the same. You can take two machines with consecutive serial numbers off the line and they can and usually will act completely different. There are many many small unseen changes that happen when the machines are built. A very slight shift in the mounting holes for the shaker drive can cause bearings and shafts to wear faster. Stuff like that can make all the difference in the world. An example of this I found on our 1680 caseIH. When I disasembled the shaker system for inspection and rebuild, I found that the three bearings on the cross shaft were way out of alignment causing considerable drag on the system and the center bearing was starting to cut into the shaft. All the bolts still had the factory paint sealing them. I figure a certain amount of "shift" must taken place on the superstructure somewhere along the line.

In 91 we bought 3 9600's all alike. Serial numbers were within 100 of each other. One machine was constantly having more problems than the rest. As a crew we all worked together every morning with service, adjustments all done together with the same method. This wasn't noticed until the second year. The third year the same machine had more down time than either of the other two. The fourth year I switched operators. Now THAT caused some grumbling. Same thing more down time. Well at the end of harvest .....after the combines were cleaned serviced and put in the barn... about 10-11 of us partook in a bit more adult beverage than we should have. Of course the usual ribbing about this and that boasts, I can do that better etc. I told the men that I would operate the down time king. Same problem the next season. I would really catch it from the crew any time I stopped. Radios blistered my ears. The answer in my opinion is there are definate differences in 3 "identical combines". Why I really don't know, just that way.
