Combines 1020 head value

I have been looking for a 20' 1020 head and after looking at a lot of junk have decided to go with a head from Young's Ag Service in Il. They take 820 heads and modify the frame and put a new cutting system, reel,row dividers and restore the rest to new for approx. $6600.00. This head will cut closer and better than an 1020. but if I put a new cutting system on this 1990 1020 it would have to be better than a 820. Dont an 820 not have all the goodies that a 1020 does the for and aft and elec header controlsIJIJIJ I think I can fix this one for less than 6600.00IJIJIJ

I would have to agree with you on the repair bill. Of course Young's is going to tell everyone that there mod's are going to be better than an 820....That is to keep his shop busy. I would not go back to the 820 because the auger rotates a lot faster then the 1020 series. I read in a Farm Show paper there is a farmer that is installing a full finger system in the 1020 series heads. I am going to call and find out more on this finger set-up. In short....go with a 1020 you will have some repairs all of the time. Don't be afraid to put some money into a head. You can only harvest a field ONCE!!!! Jack in Minnesota

No, you just will have to call the 888 number. Give them a call and they can send you info. It's worth your time to call. You can have a head with new paint and a longer number but that doesn't put bushels in the bin. I believe young's system provide's a better cut than a 1020 for the money. Personal opinion. What ever you do, do your research and convince yourself of the best value. best of luck.

We have run a 820 from Young's for six years now. They had some issues years ago, but I think they have worked through their growing pains and do a much more throurogh job of rebuilding them now. I've run ours beside several 1020s, and I out-cut them (faster and lower) all the time. The way the HHC works and bigger skid pads also out-does a 1020 too, in my opinion. Yes, an 820 will work with electric head control, all ya need is the potentiometer attachment. Youngs has also started building their own heads from scratch, called Harvestmore headers, but I don't know anything about them. As far as full finger auger, fore_aft reel, etc, I believe if your head is properly setup with a sharp auger, slick platform, and sharp cutterbar, those bells and whistles are un-needed extras. Just my .02 worth.

thats exactly right, the main reason for new ideas is to sell new headers i have ran both 820 and 1020 heads both are good heads when set properly. once i had a chain come off the reel on my 820 and the wheat was dry the head was slick and i just lifted the reel all the way up and turned it off the wheat went in just as good as long as i kept the ground speed up. i would rather have a good older header and $10000 in my wallet any day. just my .02

Around here that header would probably be worth $3500 or so at a dealer. less that that at an auction. But there isn't much market for a less than a 25' header around here. We sold a 1993 22.5 ft 1020 in excellent condition for $5000 last year. The reel bushings were getting worn, but otherwise in great shape (1 season on cutterbar and knives, fingers in auger, and bottom center sheetmetal). Most folks around here are going to McDon headers so traditional flex headers don't bring as much.

I watched a 15' 1020 sell on a private farm sale a couple of weeks ago for $5500. EC Iowa. I don't remember any details about it or its age, but I thought that was plenty high.
