Big Al, The later 1000 model corn heads had what the call a water pump type bearing at the front of the stripper rolls. That is much better than the needle bearing that the early ones had. Also look at the roller knives. If they are dull and rounded at the front edge expect to spend some time and money to replace them. Good luck! K.A.

Big Al, I would have to agree with UNIT2 as a 1000 series is better than the 800's. Also the drive sprocket for the gathering chains on a 900 or 1000 series is a keyed shaft and fastened by a bolt. the 800 is a roll pin through the shaft and will soon fail and you either replace it...make sure gathering chains are in line or you place a 3_8" x 3.5" bolt in it. Big Al: Stoltz Sales and Service in listowel,ON, has two 1083 corn heads for sale in the Ag Buyers Guide. One has poly snouts with 2 seasons work They are asking $34,900 Canadian dollars for it. The other is reconditioned and asking $28,900 Canadian dollars. You might be able to save some money on these given the exchange rate US to Canadian dollar. I have seen them a few weeks ago and the more expensive one is like new. The other is OK but it is older. They are the Case IH dealer in listowel. Their number is 800-665-2151 or 519-291-2151 There are lots of truckers heading west from Ontario every week. Bryan Farm Supply in Puslinch goes often hauling machinery east. Might be able to cut a deal there. Jim Harkness from Harriston often goes out for machinery. Hahn Farms sometimes go out also. Another guy is the jockey Pipestone Valley tractor parts from Moosimin, SK. He is a brother to Brian Ireland in Teeswater, ON. They make several trips per year bringing back old standard tractors for collectors. Hope this helps.

They have heads ranging from near-new to next-to-junk. You'd just have to see for yourself, for I stopped by recently to check out the 25 excess tractors listed on the auction. They have more harvest machinery on their lots than most Case dealers have total in one state. I must agree with the other fella in the post, I'd try closer to home before venturing out of the Great White North unless you're looking for warmer weather. It has been unseasonably nice this week in Iowa; got to almost 50 today.
