How do you have your corn head setIJ Our 1183 doesn't do that good a job of chopping stalks. Do you raise bt cornIJ Does it make a difference in the moisture of the cornIJ Do you have any add-ons that make it more aggressiveIJ I am very curious how to make our 1183 more aggressive!!!

The things that I learned in making my 1163 from a pusher to a grabber were these things. 1st and most important is timing. Time the stalk rolls by the book. then make sure the cast blocks just before the blades are good. these are what first crush the stalk. To me these seem to be the two more important things to check. as far as stalk chopping is concerned. OtheR things are the blades; roll spacing; and shape of the spiral points, in that order. This is what I have learned over the years. hope this helps JJS

Do you put grease in the gear boxes every couple of seasonsIJ How about the stalk roll shafts do they move for and aft alot, if so I bet your top bearing holders are distorted enough, that you are going to have to replace. It is effectively your back lash setting on the 2 right angle bevel gears. At least one of the aftermarket Co makes one I bet is 3 times as heavy as the original OEM. It is the same thing as any sperical bearing setting in a flange. You know how sometimes they get loose, either wear or bent out enough then the bearing can effectively come forward, thus your gears are not meshing correctly.

One other thing I am not sure about and that is I feel MF at least in the ole 63, 83 book shows installation of the trash (weed knives) put on backwards. I put them on the other way. I install them like you would place your tool bit on a lathe. Or like I would sharpen a screw driver on bench grinder. You do not want to concentrate the heat to the tip of the point. But MF may have changed this when they did away with offset angle iron and went to channel on the snapping rolls. I am not sure and do not have a 1100 series book to confirm
