Why do the 2388's need all of this to have the same New Holland corn head that a stock TR-98 or TR-99 usesIJ

Couple or reasons: First the Axial flow was NEVER intended to push a 12 row head. Second a 2212 head weight about 8300 pounds compared to a 1083 at around 4200 pounds. The main reason for all the weight is cantilevered stock rolls with cast iron gear boxes. The 2212 also utilizes 2 two speed gear boxes to match head speed to ground speed. Third because of all the counter balance needed due to the head two steering cylinders are necessary to steer the machine with the head off.

This sounds like a band aid for a broken leg. With our local AGCO dealer going out of business we looked hard at the Case rotary. However when we considered grain tank size and all the little extras we were going to have to order to fit the bigger heads we went back to AGCO. I saw the previous laundry list of mods that need to be added to make a 2388 "12-row ready". You know what it takes to make an R62 or R72 12 row readyIJ Go buy the head, because it ready already. The 2388 is an impressive machine, but they are in left field in grain tank size. There's nothing worse than spending $180,000 on a new piece of equipment then brining it home and having to add hopper extensions, etc to make it fit your operation. I was ready to give the axial flow a serious look, but until they fix obvious weaknesses I'll buy silver.
