I purchased a 1440 4 years ago and harvest around 400 acres. Although I have put a fair amount of $$ into mid-life repairs, it is a nice machine. It handles 80 bu wheat, 200 bu corn and 50 bu soybeans. I looked into a 1620 before purchasing the 1440 and found they are just too small of a machine.

20 feet is way too much header for this combine. A rule of thumb we used to use here in Ontario was 15'foot for a 1420, 16.5' or 17.5' in a 1440, 17.5' or 20' in a 1460, and 20' or 22.5' or 25' in a 1480. Bear in mind that the 1420 and 1620 were low production machines and are somewhat orphaned for parts in that the non common parts are starting to be hard to get. I would suggest a 1460 or at least a 1440.

I got to run one of the very first made1420 a demo test combine my ucle is a dealer it had I think a 22' header or 24' (long time ago) and it would eat grain like no tomorrow . It however had a 1480 engine in it. with a standad engine not neer enough HP. It would go 32mph in road gear I think I was about 14 when I got to run it for a week . It had all kinda fancy stuff way back then that they were working on auto reel hight auto real speed you name it it had it. I would stay away from a a I have a 1440 a 1460 and two 1688 the 1440 size is good if you have very many hills you should go with the extra hp of a 1460 the main difference or if your crops do ocasanially get heavy that few extra hp can make a world of diff. I am selling my 1460 my 1440 burned up last year so I got a good deall on the 1688 so I am trying to sell one of them and my 1460 if interested in the 1460 let me know I know of a couple cheap freight outfits Dan
