Ran a 79 1440 for about 4 years before going to a 1640. For the size of heads you are talking,it should be a good fit. Be sure to get one that is a 81 or newer to get the electric over hydraulic controls for the flexhead.

I have a 1440,nice little combine. You should be happy with it in your situation. The 1440 shares threshing parts with a 1460 so you have enough capacity inside. The 1440 uses a lghter trans.,can be a problem, and lighter final drives.I think the 1440 uses the same final drives as the old 815 for what that is worth.Depending on hours and previous use,the transition cone can wear a hole in the bottom left corner, but that is common with all axial flows.I use a 6 row head on mine, and a 17.5' bean head, but thinking about going to a 20' head next year. Most of my corn acres are in seed corn,so I only have about 160 ac. of corn, but about 350-380 ac. of beans.Good luck.

I purchased a 1440 this past winter. The machine has about 2300 hours so I have been replacing_fixing some mid-life wear points. No problem at all getting parts. Although it will probably take me a year or so, I expect to get the combine in A-1 shape and keep it for a long time.
