Combines 1440 questions

I have a 1440 standard rotor with a 15' head and a 6 row corn headthat I harvest 400 acres with and love it. I don't have a rock trap but a johnson rock guard on the cutter bar works great. I have electric on mine but I know people with the cable style and it works ok. I would say if the machine is in good shape, you would be real pleased with it! Go for it.

You can change over to the electric header height control but it is somewhat of an effort and the cable system works well, some say more responsive, and don't think it would be worth the time and effort.some of the early 1020 heads had the mechanical linkage available and this would be a more practical solution.

Replied earlier and lost it somewhere in the transfer so the above is abbreviated. Wanted to add that if you have the rock retarding drum on the front of the feederhouse( has indentations that the feederchain runs in making the slats close to the drum in the middle) you can keep out the bigger rocks by setting the upper limit down low. Combined with a Johnson rock guard or adding a 3" OD hose or pvc pipe behind the guards with conduit clamps you have good protection from rocks. Again much simpler conversion then adding a rock trap and MUCH less maintenance. Hose conversion works really slick for beans but not well at all in small grain, so you will want to remove it for them. I think a 15-16 ft. head will work well..Good luck.

We used to run a 1440 on up to 1,200 acres of corn and beans a year with minimal troubles but it got very good off season maintance. Our's had the cable header control, we later got a 1460 with the electric and always felt that the cable worked better in the field. For beans I would want a good chaff spreader and disruptor's if it doesn't have a chopper. We ran a 15' and a 16.5' 820 head on our's and it handled them both very well.

Does the 3" hose or pvc pipe flex enough to not affect the head flexingIJ Never heard of anyone doing that around here, but I am thinking of giving it a try. Fill me in on any details. Thanks.

This modification came from the Gleaner board and it seems that they prefer 3" suction hose because it is more flexible than pvc pipe. Some still use the pvc pipe and cut it into several pieces for added flex.I think the modification started out in a year of wide spread short beans and aids in getting them into the auger with less bunching. Also aids in keeping loose beans from dropping off the cutter bar.Replace the guard bolt with a longer one, fasten the guard in place then use a second nut to secure a conduit clamp of the right diameter to match the hose. When I tried this, the recommended sizes and materials varied, and 3 to 3.5" seemed too big for me so i used 2" schedule 40 pvc, in one piece across the head. Clamp about every 2 feet.On an 820 head ,it doesn't change the flexibility.Works better than I thought it would so have not changed and is easy to store in the tube of the header trailer.

I just did mine yesterday using pvc conduit, it is way cheaper than any other stuff. Mine is an 820 head and the 2" was big enough. I put a clamp on every hold down section and used a 3" or so bolt. Tighten one nut down on the section add one more then your clamp and use the original rounded head nut (if still used) to hold the clamp on. I made the joint right in the middle with two pieces of pipe (15' head)as there is a hold down there. Didn't use the flared connector just cut that end off. I wasn't having any problems with feeding but I HAVE ROCKS! I still run a 715 and plan on keeping it and with no rock trap I am always looking for rocks and in the dust good luck! If this helps a little great, I have spent $20 on other things that I wished I wouldn't. One other thing make shure you get the metal clamps that are made for pvc conduit as I think there are two styles and use the one sided clamp. You may have to re set the stops on your reel hight too.

I am still lost on this and will be fighting rocks this year. I use an 810 header with AHHC. Would I place the PVC behind the guard and cutter barIJ I am assuming that if it is behind the cutter bar the bean fall over the tube and the rocks push up against it and have to be removed by hand but do not get onto the header floor and into the auger.... Please help me see this clearly--it really sounds like a solution to an ongoing problem.

You have it figured out.. Go over to the Gleaner page and click hyper mods under the left hand topics. Then click header mods and scroll down to hose mod and there is a picture... The gleaner people pretty much like a 3 in pipe. I find the 2" does well on the IH header.
