Tazfarmer, I'm not sure the 1440 D436 is the same as the 986 model but in the tractor engines they did not put the piston cooling jets in.Also the Dt436 engines had a wider gear in the oil pump to handel the extra load of jets and turbo..those items can be added to your engine but may be more work then you were planning..would guess you could use a turbo if you kept the Hp boost down and didn't push the boosted combine hard..

I added a turbo from a salvage 1460 onto my 1440. I left injection pump the same. I have had no problems. The 1440 uses a less agressive waterpump which I changed to the 1460 style for extra circulation of coolant.

You could make a few non engine modifications that will get some more ponies for you. Check out MARlINS IMPEllER BlADES (through lowens). Ensure beater bearings are loose and clean. Do you have the electric lift pumpIJ Front rotor bearing good. It sounds like it has been a good engine. I would leave well enough alone and look for hp increases elsewhere. Put your turbo on if and when you do a complete teardown. Don't go looking for trouble.

All I am saying is that if the engine is running well, one should look for other ways of improving horsepower that doesn't involve messing with the motor.

Taz We have been running a 1979 1440 with a turbo since 1980. No problems after 3500 hours. The turbo is about the only differance between a 40 and a 60.

I did get some more horsepower. I didn't even touch the engine. I got a good trade on a 1992 1680. It had 3000hrs. on it when I traded for it. I ran 1000 acres through it with minimal repairs. Very pleased with the extra horses.
