Combines 1460 1660

Old860, I have owned an 860 and run a 1992 model 1660 a few years back. I didn't notice a whole lot more capacity wise, Personally. But The 1660 was a much smoother running machine, quiet , more "refined" so to speak. Alot of 860 Hydro's run 30' headers and I don't think I've ever seen a 1660 with more than a 25'. I'd say they are close in capacity on a hot dry day of harvesting. Been looking at a few 1660's on the internet for about $35k you can get a pretty descent machine.

I bought an 88 model 1660 last year w 3500 hrs on it and here are some of the problems I had with it. replaced all augers ( flighting was thin) replaced elephant ears (had sharp edges) replaced rotor and separator belt repaired clean grain pan under clean grain auger(had rust holes in it) repaired bottom of grain tank(was rusted out in places replaced all chains and a couple of sprockets replaced throat chain(chain was worn and bars bent) replaced clean grain and tailings conveyors replaced bearings in unloader auger elbow replaced all four tires(drive tires had cracks in them and one gave way during harvest) Things to replace next year: have concaves rebuilt and hardfaced(they are worn and do not have sharp edges anymore) replace half of rasp bars replace piece with cleanout door on bottom of unloading auger be sure to check condition of threshing area(elephant ears, rasp bars, concaves) and make sure rotor is balanced. This takes time but is expensive to repair if it is worn. Also, check to make sure all the straps on the cleaning fan are there. Overall, the machine performed well, and I now have a quality machine.

Dakotaboy You really need to go to some auctions. At the combine auction at Sikeston MO last August, a 1688 with 2,500 or so hrs, 2 wheel dr., specialty rotor, no chopper, brought 18,000. And there were some others with 4-wd that were in the mid 20's. That's not to say they didn't need a little work but. Call Don King at Sikeston, he had a couple 1688's last year with 4-wd he would take about $33,000 for it seems. Chads

Chads, Wow, sounds cheap. No I haven't did any actual auctions yet, I'm just going by prices on the internet. I won't be buying anything for awhile. But yeh , I'm sure your right on that.
