Combines 1480 Question

Rob, years ago I looked into changing the rotary screen on a 14 series to a 16 and trust me, you would want to have to do it pretty bad to do it. Quite a bit of difference between the 2. As far as your hydraulics, the unloader may stop when you steer at lower RPMs, although it should not affect much at high idle. Steering is first priority in the hydraulic system followed by unloader swing_reel lift functions and then once that is all satisfied the remaining oil is used for header lift. That is why your header may lift very slowly or not at all when you are running your combine at low idle. As far as the header lifting up when you are steering, that was a problem Case fixed back in 1990 with some changes in the header valve of the valve stack. There is a service bulletin and parts are not too expensive to fix this. let me know if you need bulletin or partns.

we had a 1980 1480 that the prior owner had changed to screen to the back, he had done a very clean job and it worked fine so yes it is possible

Please advise as to the service bulletin n you reference. I have that problem on my 1440...happens when trying to attach headers steering into them at slow speed. Thanks

Jerry, the service bulletin for this is NHE SB 075 90. It is a 1990 bulletin, so your CaseIH dealer will have to do a little digging in his archives for the bulletin. The partns needed are 1986839C1 and 483-1083. The bulletin explains what to do and is not all that hard to do. Good luck!

Dathon,1480's were low on HP and hydro cooling. This was upgraded on 16xx (look for rear mounted rotating screen)They also beefed up the chassie and drivetrain. Most other improvements (cleaning fan, header reverser)are offered as updates. later models intro even more HP and the longer cleaning sys. Hope you find a bargin.

We finished our first season with our 1480. It will do more than twice as much as our 1500 NH. Only problem is with internal chopper making too much dust. It gets sucked in to the radiator an it plugged more than we would have liked. Next year we will probably run with the chopper on low speed. Might look at an aftermarket chopper though.

I think a 60 series machine will under most conditions have more capacity then your 750 as i have heard from good friends who made this trade several years ago so either will work for you..Don,t think the axial combines have much hidden area so just check for wear and damage stem to stern..take the side doors off and look the rotor concave and grate area over..put the rotor transmission in nuetral and see if the rotor has a heavy side ...these machines will run smoothly when turned on and run at full speed under no load, not bounce like your old massey...if you want to spend the bucks a 1680 is nicer than the 1480 but the older series can work quite well and will accept many of the newer updates...Good luck

Is a chopper necessary or does the rotor grind up the straw sufficientlyIJ From the straw we raise most of the CIH people have minimal trouble. From my observations it doesn't shredd it like my massey but spread out, it is managable. I think back to the piles of straw behind grandpa's old MF82 with that steel spinner slinging that stuff waste deep. What a mess.
