Combines 1640 Cleaning Fan

Dave; Do you mean the fan hits when turned by hand or when the combine is in gear and driven by it's beltIJ Reason I ask is I replaced 3 at once one time, and they were in succession one behind the other, it threw the whole assembly out of balance so bad the fan would clatter when up to speed. The remedy was to stagger the 6 blades so every other one was the new one. The new blades were not the same weight as the old ones. Yeah, it's a pain to work on the fan. Cut out a wide enough slot in the housing on the right side so you can slip the blade in or out as required. Saves lots of time and effort when changing blades. I hope the shaft ain't bent.

Had the same problem on a 1460 wild cat must of been in the combine when dad started one day and jumped into the fan big noise and found dad pulling out the cat with a screwdrver out of the reterns auger bent up the fan blades fixed them with a hamer 300 ac later one blade "exploded" made a mess of the cage Quick fix made my own blade out of sheat steel then spent some time with a hamer and a long bar bashing the cage so none of the blades hit takes a long time because you haveto run it to speed to get it right. ran for rest of harvest 500ac and replaced blades before next seson my tip for changing blades four hands and 1_4in air rachet saves lots of time.

It rubs when you turn it by hand and when the seperator is on. Boy, I never thought that the new blade might not weigh the same. Just has new paint, same size. I will try today to get it fixed. Just 25 acres left and break down.

Had one blade end break off an dent the top exit edge of the squirl cage. Beat it back to shape with a hammer and some heavysteel. Replaced all blades with new and 3 were made of thicker gauge metal so I staggered them. Blades still hit so i moved the fan bearing mounts to clear.(This procedure is in op manual).No problems since. Dan Burysek

Check your fan bearings also. I had one fail this year,the cage that kept the balls evenly seperated had fallen apart. I had vibration and one blade hitting the housing because the bad bearing was allowing the fan shaft to get off center. New bearings made everything fine again.

Got it fixed yesterday in about 2 hours. Had to just keep adjusting the new blade and the one to each side. You think you have all the bolts tight until you up them under 1000 rpm! The new blades are made of thicker metal then the old ones. My dealer mechanic said that the blades can get stress cracks in them. I noticed another blade cracked half way threw. So maybe something didnot get into the fan. Another winter project.
