Combines 1660 IN WHEAT

It will not work very well with that setup you will really need wheat concaves (3_16 with all wires in) and oval punched grates and then a wheat shoe seive if you want it right. Your grain in the tank will look like sh--. lots of untrashed heads and bits of straw from the keystock. And dont even think about bailing straw behind it. GOOD lUCK! If interested I do have concaves I would sell you.

we are running a 1688 in wheat, corn, beans, with large wires, all installed, spec rotor, Gorden bars, key stock grates...It would do a fair job if adjusted just right, but when we added a Gorden air jet chaffer for each crop, it cleaned up well...cut your wheat when it is above 15% and you can bale it, leave it until it is 12% and it goes to nothing, just like most of the cylinder machines do...We have baled lot of straw behind both...Damp straw holds together much better than dry straw. we used to change grates between large and small grains with our 1460, but no more - seems to have been a waste of time...Gorden air jet chaffer is easy to change with only wingnuts, chaffer stays in the machine...clean grain sieve stays at 60% open for all crops to direct air to chaffer with fan running at warp speed.

Sounds like I need to get more wires, are these something the dealer will haveIJ I would be interested in those slotted grates. What are you asking for themIJ I hope I dont have to change seives, dont want to much invested because this might be the only year for wheat. THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE.

You should have no trouble at all! We don't bale the straw and therefore I put gordon bars in the threshing portion of the rotor (front 1_2) and spiked rasps on the back (seperator area). Our 1660 otherwise was set the same as yours. We don't have a chopper either, but it chops it up nice for plow down. I have all the setting written down in the machine but I'll try to remember most of them. Rotor run as fast as it will go (high range) and you can always slow it down from there. Concaves need to be set between 2 and 3. Fan speed around 800. I believe sieves and chaffer were right on with the book specs. Now instead of playing around with all those wires, we made, but you can buy those cover plates and cover 1 1_2 concaves with them. I leave the first one in for soys as well. It works like a dream. I have put many of our own mods and inventions on it, and I have a few more in store, but our 1989 1660 is awesome. I have been running our machine for about 7 years and it still amazes me, of course thats because I went from several old Gleaner F's to this machine! let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!

If you do decide to change to air jet chaffer, management of that end of the threshing is over with...Corn will no longer 'go over the sieves' nor will it recirculate and increase FM and broken grain...I never asked, but I am sure once the air jet has been tryed, they wouldn't be returned for lack of increased capacity and better sample.

If you install the AirJet, I have used the soybean elements for wheat. The wheat elements are a little small in size.
