Jon, you are not alone on breaking the fan shaft. It was explained to me that the stepdown on the shaft where the bearing stops has a 90 degree cut. An engineer told me that if you would round this edge a bit with a file before installing the new bearing it would help to stop the breakage of the fan shaft when a jolt is applied, as when your bolts broke on the driver shaft. It has something to do with the physics and molecular movement within the metal, Too deep for my knowledge but I do have some faith in those that study these elements. I hope that you were able to find a used shaft, but when the dealers install the cross flow fans they usually just cut the old shafts out. I would recommend a cross flow fan on your next repair.
