We have had a similar problem twice with our 1680. Both times it was a loose bolt in the ground wire at the left hand side of the top of the feeder house. The cover over the area of the top shaft is held on with 2 bolts on each side. I don't know why but they do come loose, and the variable speed gets erratic. CardaleBob
