Combines 1680 vs 2188

We have a '90 1680 and a '96 2188 that we run together. They have never been set up identically, but if they had the same rotor I would put my money on the 1680 to have the most capacity. The 2188 engine just seems to fall off a cliff when it gets pulled hard, but the 1680 just keeps chugging. We just had the 2188 pump gone through, but it didn't help.

I have a really good 1680. needs some minor sheet metal work,it's not anything i can't do myself. I quess i have the upgrade fever.I've had a few friends say they wish they had there 1680's back they either traded to 2188's or 9600(j.d). I like the cab on the 21 series i wish i could put one of those on my 1680.

Well i know some guys that run a 2388 and a 1680. both run 30'1020 headers and the 1680 keeps up with the 2388. if you want you can update the 1680 . like the other man said. the 1680 keeps chuggin. So i would keep the 1680

The 2188 cab is nice, but is has it's weak points too. At night, the windows really need to be clean. That curved glass is hard to see out of. The header raise switch is backwards, so you routinely run the header into the ground until you get "converted". The best part is that you can look down behind a 25' head easily. That makes a long day seem a little shorter. The hydraulics are also far superior. You can pick up the header and steer the machine at an idle.

This comment goes out to"Farm Kid2" and any one else that thinks their 2100 or 2300 might be short of power, so the first thing poeple do is overhaul the inj. pump, and find that did not help! Did you ever try checking your "hydrostatic drive psi"IJ Among other non costly checks do not skip this, or maybe your dealer support is not that well educated in knowing all the minor adjustments that give these machines the very best that they can offer!

Just walked in from running red clover for a neighbor that is running a 2001 2388. I run a navistar powered 1680, with a modified tailings elevator and a few other homemade upgrades, and I ran his shorts off. We've ran with him and other 21 and 23 series, and several of them mentioned that they felt they lost the "feel" of how the machine is running with the extra hp available. The grain moniters are only good for so much. Sometimes in small seed legumes and some grasses they are useless. If you have the cash and the shop to work in, maybe put the pencil to doing some of your own upgrades and modifications. I'm sure there are a few things you've always thought should have been there from the factory. Or a few things you thought should have been built a liitle different. like for the difference your dealer is going to want, you can look into your own hydraulic system. Maybe one that has an extra hook up so you can power some new equipment later when you build it. If you've been running that machine since new, you know the machine inside and out. Thats worth alot in my book.

I think our issue with the 2188 is engine timing. When I had it at the pump shop I asked them to advance it, but they only went to the fast side of spec, which is way slower than a 1680. We have the emission engine and P pump. The good news is that it uses less fuel. What would be the symptoms of low hydraulic drive pressureIJ

The symtoms would be, having to pull back out of any kind prolonged load, such as going up hill, near full hopper as to empty, use of larger heads or any thing else you want to add. Factory specs. for the hydro drive psi is 6600psi. This might be ok for flat landers. By getting the psi to about 7500-7650psi you will think you just added 40-50hp. Do not get to much closer to 8000psi or you might give your machine a oil bath. ATTENTION, these psi's are not applicable on 1600's!!!!!!!

Having had both a 1600 and a 2188 here are the main big diffs. as far as capacity goes they are about even but there are some things I really like about the 2188 here they are in order of how important they are to me: 1. BRAKES they really work on the 2188 2. much more hyd power 3. much better cab much, much, much better 4. the unloading auger control is a lot better. 5. better lights 6. the hopper full light! 7. the concave adjustment in the cab is great. Now I have some complaints also: If you go with a 2188 try not to buy a 95 or 96 model year I have had alot of problems with wiring and second gear with both of mine and if you really push the issue alot of other guys have had problems also the cab filters are a joke! I clean them once or twice a day and still end up changing them mid season. Good luck I hope that I have been "fair and balanced" later, Will
