Combines 1688 Electrical Problem

Had a similar problem with my 1987 1440 this year. Starter just didn't seem to spin the engine like it should. All gauges and indicaters reading normal. Alternater putting out about 13.5 volts. I assumesd the batteries were weak since I had to boost it several times last fall in cold weather to get it to start. Checked connections last fall and found cable loose at starter. This Sep before starting corn harvest the same problem again. Replaced the batteries which were the original I think. The first time with new batteries it barely turned the engine over. Replaced the starter, now no problem and on starting the engine turns over like it should. Did not lookin the starter, but I think there may have been a bad spot on the armature or wires burnt in the feilds. I have had this problem before with a few starters. Just my expirience, hope this helps.

Do you have a Electric Feeder House reverser. Neighbor has a 1991 1680 and the first year he ran it he had all kinds of electrical problems. Figured out that it was the cables that ran down to the reverser had a bad cable. He put new batteries and alternator and finally the put new cables and solved the problem.

When you were checking and cleaning the various electrial connections make sure the one where the ground cable connects to the engine or frame is clean and tight. I have seen the connection between the battery ground and the engine cause weird problems on a pickup a couple of times that caused the battery and starter to be replaced needlessly.

I had this problem as well and found the connection between the two batteries bad. So the combine would run on one battery only. We had to resolder the cable into the battery clamp.
