I have a 1990 corn_bean machine, which would explain it.

We had a 1982 1480 with a 2 sp hydro, worked well esp. pushing a JD row crop hd cutting soybeans. The 2 sp on corn-soybean machines back then even worked in 3rd gear, made for a good road speed.
