I have been 20" for 6 years now. I know what you are talking about. This is the first year I have had the problem but with the drought and high plant population (38,000) the stalks are quite thin. Had no problems till this year. I have been leaving alot of ears in the field as they never make it into the head. Sure don't help the yield any.

Nod, May I ask why such a high populationIJ Here in KS. we shoot for 30 to 32 thousand in 30" rows even in irrigated corn.

Have been increasing plant pop. each year. Each time the yield increase followed. With or with out the drought I learned that 38,000 is too high. Plan to stay in the 34-36 range in the future.

I would think that if you ran a high ground speed and a low header speed, say, around 450 rpm you should push the stalks back to the rear of the rolls. Also you could try pushing the chain towards the center with the chain guide. It will probably wear faster but if you save more grain it would be worth it. Just some thoughts-good luck.

low end backshaft speed will never be below 520. any lower the sheaves will never grip the belt.............. rember 1_8 gap in lower sheaves.when hearder slowed down.
