Farm Progress Show

The 35th year of Canada's Farm Progress Show kicked off in Regina Tuesday.

It's the first time the show can boast over 800 displays, with the total coming in at 806. Buyers registered so far represent 55 different countries.

The show was launched Monday afternoon. At the opening, Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart announced one million dollars in funding to expand agriculture exports and enhance trade opportunities. The International Market Development Program aims to increase the number and value of trade missions coming in to Saskatchewan.

"What we do in Saskatchewan is quite outstanding," said Minister Stewart, "we just need to get the word out to the rest of the world."

That's something Show Manager Rob O'Connor agrees with.

"Even for a $1,500 travel investment for those buyers, it's just that little bit that helps them make the decision to come to our show, and then invest, on average, $2.5 million in agriculture equipment and technology," O'Connor said.

Versatile Unveils First Combine to Enter the Market in More Than a Decade

REGINA, SK, June 20, 2012 ? Versatile will launch a new rotary combine at Canada's Farm Progress Show this week. The Versatile RT490 combine is the first new combine introduced in North America in more than a decade and will further compliment the Versatile line of equipment.

The threshing system on the Versatile RT490 is unique, featuring a rotating concave rotary system. A 360° concave counter rotates to the rotor for increased capacity, better productivity and reduced loss. This concave ensures that the entire thresher and separator area is utilized. A 4-stage feeder house with a unique inclined chamber replaces the traditional feeder housing with four feeding beaters, providing a considerable increase in processing stability and combine productivity by allowing a uniform layer of material to enter the rotor. The 340 bu. grain tank features standard hopper extensions that are controlled from the cab for transportation or storage.

Like all Versatile products, the new combine is powered by Cummins. The RT490 features a 490 horsepower Cummins QSX 11.9L engine that meets interim Tier 4 emissions standards.

Adam Reid, Versatile Director of Marketing, says this Class VIII combine has been thoroughly tested in a variety of crops and harvesting conditions, both in North America and around the world. ?This combine has been through significant testing including more than 2000 acres in fields in Canada and the United States. Nearly every crop grown in North America has been tested including cereal crops, corn, pulse crops and rice. The productivity was excellent and the reliability of these combines was second to none.?

Reid adds that the combine is a welcome addition to the Versatile product line, sharing the hallmarks of reliability, durability and ease of service and maintenance. ?The RT490 is simple and convenient to operate and maintain. The number of lubrication points and mechanical drives that need adjustment is minimized and are easily accessible."

REGINA ? Bill Young is pretty sure he?s seen every Canada?s Farm Progress Show since it began 35 years ago. As one of the founding partners in Young?s Equipment, a farm machinery dealership in Saskatchewan, his role at the farm progress show started in the new, shiny machinery arena. But since 1997, when he brought his first restored piece of farm equipment to the Antique Truck and Tractor Display, he?s shifted toward the old and rusty side of things.

?Reminiscing is the best part of the antique show,? said Young. ?Getting the stories of all the troubles (people) had finding pieces for (their equipment). There?s a story behind every piece in there.?

This year, the antique show has 84 exhibitors and more than 140 pieces of equipment on display.

Young is showing off his restored 1939 Ford 1 Ton pickup, a treasure from his childhood that he once used when he was dating his wife.

Visitors to the farm progress show get a chance to check out history in action twice a day ? at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. ? when the antiques roll out of the Prairie, Pasqua, Harlton Building and parade around the property.

?You?ve got some family members coming to see stuff that?s been sold and dealt with, and other ones that are taking pride in what they?ve restored in honour of their family,? said Laurie Temple, chair of the antique truck and tractor display.

In a show that focuses on the future of farming, the antique show stands as a reminder of where the industry began.

?It?s our heritage, it?s where we come from,? said Temple. ?You have to start somewhere and lots of people have been where they have been.?

How Big is Too Big For Air Carts?

At Canada's Farm Progress Show in Regina this week it was difficult to miss the impressive rail car (errr...air cart) from Seed Hawk. Seed Hawk has a 1300 bushel air cart that is visually astonishing. *For the farmers looking to seed a section of wheat without having to refill the drill, this is*the perfect option for you. *Obviously major tractor horsepower is required to play in this weight class.
We are hearing more and more farmers asking, "how big is too big" *Concerns over compaction in the heavier soils, and the general mobility of the unit are all concerns or issues everyone must sort through when picking an air cart.
As the saying goes, "go big or go home"

Pellet Making Made Easy with the Mobile Pellet Mill

One of my favourite things about this year's Farm Progress show was getting to watch live demonstrations of all of the cool equipment and products that manufacturers brought to the show. There is nothing that sells you on a product better than watching that product in action.
One of the really cool things I got to see in action was a mobile pellet mill by Lawson Mills Biomass Solutions. It's a pelleting mill that can fit into a cargo trailer that operates very efficiently with a fairly decent output and a surprisingly low operating cost. The applications are also extremely varied. At the booth they had samples of everything from pelleted alfalfa to coconut husk to horse manure.

I watched the mill go to work on some alfalfa squares courtesy of a demonstration by one of the people behind the mill, Paul Lawson.
