Combines 2100 series FIRES

last fall I noticed smoke coming from the bearing housing at the back of the rotor on my 2144. Small bits of grease and chaff seemed to get hot and started smoking even though the bearing was fine. It's a difficult area to clean and is right in front of the engine. You need to take a small panel held with a few bolts off to access this area. I pressure washed this housing and headed back to the field. This might be one place to check.

Catman didn't really give too many details so it's pretty hard to take a guess at it. My suspicion would be a fuel leak. Smoldering chaff by the rotor gearbox would not likely consume the whole machine IMO. 2188's have a habit of wearing holes in the injector lines either by the wiring for the air conditioning compressor rubbing against them or by the lines rubbing against each other. If by chance the injector lines have not melted off the motor, inspect them just above the injection pump and see if there are any small holes in them.

BIl had a fire on their 2388 a while and I think he said the problem was the engine fan bearingIJIJ They saved the combine but lost some wheat.
