I didn't break the extension I broke the tube. I did not have 4wd but I did use a 3_4" drive ratchet and a pipe about 6' long the bolts were tight. And when I put it back together we tightened them up the same way. Check your tube it may also be cracked and with one axle out it would be easier to fix noe then have it break in the field
