On one of two 2188s I had, I had a lot of trouble with the chaffer staying in place. Make sure you use grade eigth bolts in there and also make sure you use locktite so those bolts do not come lose. I have also heard that on some of those 2188s the shoe hanger was not welded up square or became out of square sometime down the road and that could cause the bolts to break and from my experience a lot of other things. If you have'nt had other things break back there when the bolts broke, consider yourself lucky. K.A.

There is an update for the 2188 that has a stronger wishbone support for the shaker drive and a slow down kit for the shaker drive. There is also a procedure to take some of the play out of the shaker slip clutch (behind the big pulley). There is trouble with vibration in the drive that shakes everything apart. Also check your bushings in the shaker arms. Any vibration or jarring will break parts on the sieves.

There is a "squareing procedure" that was available to the dealers. Should be in a service bulletin. That will help keep the shoe in line with the rest of the machine. Also, if you replace any of the rubber bushings, tighten them in mid-swing. If they don't rotate the same distance each way, they won't last and put more stress on the rest of the system. The slow down kit and the "tight" shaker drive from the current 2388 is a good idea. The cast shoe hangers are also a big improvement.

Be sure the bolts are a reputable grade 8 for replacement, there are a lot of poor bolts out there marked as grade 8, another problem with free trade in the world, who do you go after if a $1.00 grade 8 bolt fails and wrecks $1000 worth of victim parts. All USA mfgd bolts used to be marked with a brand that was copyrighted, like branding a steer, then you had something concrete to tell if it was good.

Make sure the chaffer is sandwiched tight at the front of the shoe. If there is slop in the front the stress on the moving chaffer will all be on the rear bolts
