Combines 2188 Question

We have a 2188 that has around 1500 hours on it. We have replaced the feeder chain, the shaker arm bushings and various chains. Mostly regular maintenance. We have been pleased with it. It will cut 60 bushel HRS wheat and 45 bushel soybeans at 4+ MPH with a 30 ft. head. I don't think you can fill it with a 6 row head unless it is record type corn. Not much experience w_ that good of corn in our area. Hope this helps. PS We have a 1997 model. There are differences as you go up in years.

If you want to stay with a 6 row head, I would suggest buying a good used 1660,1666,or 2166, I ran l series Gleaners for years, then bought a 1996 model 1666....The 1666 is a MUCH better machine in almost every way....Going from an M Gleaner to a 2188 will be MIND BOGGlING....*lOl*...I did like the Gleaner "hugger" corn head better in the way it picks up corn and doesn't lose ears...The Case-IH 1063 head is great for no maintenence....

i run a 6 row head on my 1688 and get along fine, there are things you can do so you won't have any problems, have a neighbor who runs a 6 row on a 2388.

What do you do different running a 6row head on a 1688 or 2188IJWhy do some guy think you can only run an 8 row head,I know that the combine won't be up to capacity,but I like the extra 45 hp over the 2166 and the larger feeder house and bin.What will happen if combine isn't full all the time,will it throw a lot of corn out the backIJ

this is where you'll have to retard the vains to slow, and do a few other things to keep from loosing too much grain.

retard the vanes, pull every other wire out of the back section of grates, run faster if possible, slow your rotor down and run it a little tighter. you will get along fine, trust me we have done it for along time, and have alot of guys around here doing it.

It's a bunch of bologna to say you can't run a 6 row head with a 2188 or a 2388. I've done it for many, many years and have no trouble whatsoever. I don't retard vanes or pull wires and have very, very, little loss out the back. No more than those running 8 row heads.

Running two 2188,s with 12 row heads in 250 bu corn and 36' mac dons in 80+ bu wheat and have no worrys and do a good job if set right

We didn't do anything and running 6 rows fine We bought an air jet chaffer this year, best improvement we have seen on a 1688. We were told also that we couldn't keep it full enough and grain would come out the back...not so...that chaffer is almost as big as a pickup bed, and running the fan at 1300 rpm or what ever max you can get...running clean grain sieve at 65, you can run your fingers thru the sieve = no tailings, which I have found to be the combine operator's biggest mistake-too many tailings.
