You hear a few horror stories about the 2100 series, but I think most of those are the '95 model. We have a late 96 and it seems fine. My pick of the litter would be the 97 so that you get the heavier frame where the final drives bolt on.

Some 2188s had trouble shaking the shoe and sieves to pieces. look in the back for any welds around the shoe hanger and sieves, also on the sides where the shoe pivots. If there are any welds in that area don't even think of buying it. But not all were prone to trouble in that area. I had two 2188s. One I couldn't keep the sieves in it and the other never gave any trouble. like Farm Kid2 said, the 97 would be the pick of the litter.
