I you get it figured out, I want to know also. I have fought a 2188 with this same issue, just learn to deal with its inperfection. First attempt dealer shimmed something and that did seem to make it better, then another time they changed out the spool assembly... that was a waste of money no improvement. Good luck!

We dramatically improved this problem in our 2188 simply by changing hydraulic filters!

Check the hyd motor and drive assy.on the right end of the reel.Too much slack in the chain or a hub loose on a shaft allows to much "free play" in the drive line causing surges when loads vary.This is on a 1020,I`m sure it would act the same on other brands.Have fun and Giter Dun.
