I think the double drive versions started in 1993_94, but that won't fix your problem. The bar back breaks due to the rear stabilizer bushings being worn out. They are located at the rear left hand side of the header where the two grease fittings are with the 10 hours decals. When these bushings are worn the frame that the wobble box is mounted to will start to move laterally with every stroke of the knife. When this happens the frame tries to stabilize through the bar back at it breaks. No matter how often its rewelded or the bar replaced it will keep breaking until the bushings are replaced. The header will shake badly when the bushings are worn, check with a prybar at the outside mount and pry down on the nut. If there is any movement at all it's toast.

What RedHat said is right on. Also not only do those bearings go bad but sometimes that stabilizer bar actually breaks, then things really start shaking. I'm not sure what you are referring to in the double drive sickle. What I would call a double drive sickle is something the 25' 1020 header never had, but they did go to the enclosed wobble box in 1997 and that was a big improvement.

I got a new 25ft.1020 head 2 years ago and it does not have a double drive on the sickle. The right side only drives the auger.

What you guys are calling a double drive sickle is a double drive header. A double drive sickle is when the sickle drives from each side of the header and meets in the middle of the header. CIH has never had that on the 1020 headers. All the 1020 headers that I've seen the sickle drives on the left side and the auger and reel drive on the right side.

By double drive I refer to the head having two pto shafts. One that drives the knife and one that drives the auger, not a double knife drive like the 2020 heads.

The back bone bar will break at the left side if the first section of shoes that are att to the woble box mount is broken . This is ancored to the mount by a inch and half angle under the woble box. The angle is too light , should be a better and heavier material. If you do this and instal new bearings like the other guys say , you should be OK

It was a peice of one and half by mabey 3_4 tubing. It runs at a 45 angle from the frame to the wobble box rightIJ That was the last time time it broke I replaced that. That may have been my problemIJ But will check the bushing too thanks
