both sides. And they can be mixed throughout as long as balance is maitained. The high wire grate is better about preventing cob breakup but you do not have to install these. I have read here about some even cutting up the removed wires, placing on top of the remaining ones and welding in. This would take a WHIlE, but you would have a high wire grate. Early on in the process, before 3_4" were available, we would remove every other cyl bar, cut out every other ridge (bummer of a job on the chrome bars) leaving 1" spacing, rebalance the opposite bars and reinstall. Mix worked really well.
