The standard pulley that drives the knife on a 1020 header with 1-1_2" knife 8-3_8" diameter for 400 rpm. The optional one is 9-5_8" for 460 rpm. For the 3" knife you will want to run the 10-1_2" pulley for 500 rpm. They offer a 12-1_2" pulley also for 600 rpm, but I don't think it gets used very often. The 10-1_2" pulley is PN 1316047C1 and it takes belt PN 247428A1. We found this out the hard way trying to cut tough wheat straw with a 400 rpm pulley and 3" knife.

Have to agree with JFarms on this one. Want to add 1 additional item. When you install the 3" cut, the 2 or 3 guards on the way left side are different then the rest of them. The top part of these 2 guards is shorter to allow room for the cycle head to move. If you do not install the correct ones the cycle will NOT go in all the way from the left side and you will wander "what the He** is going on!!! by the way I did not change pulley size. JWK

About four years ago I converted ours (has since been traded),wasn't too hard to do at all. Basically ripped off the old sickle, guards, whole deal. Put on the new guards and slide the new sickle in. Didn't change the pulley as we had the larger one already installed, but the dealer said if we'd had the smaller one on there he highly recommended that we change it. Hardest part of the whole conversion was making sure all the guards were lined up correctly, and even that wasn't difficult.

We got along OK in beans with the 400 rpm pulley, but we had the Crary Golden Cut guards that have the twice the cutting surfaces. I did notice a lot of shatter at higher ground speeds, but I'm not sure if that would have been eliminated by higher knife speed. If you are running a large header compared to the machine and therefore will be running slower, I bet the 460 rpm would be fine. I doubt you will be happy with the 400 rpm though.

We have converted two heads from 1.5" cut to 3" cut. One was a 20' and the other was a 25' and did not change pulleys on either one of them. I see some one brought up the different guards on the left side. Also theere is a half guard ( no top) on each side but all of this is included in the kit. I might add there are 2 different conversion kits, a regular duty and a heavy duty. When we changed the 20' there was only the regular duty. Changed the 25' in '01 and went with the heavy duty. I would recomend the h.d., especially if you have rocks, as it does not cost that much more.Also, on the 25' we added the plastic fingers that go on each side of the head to deflect crop away from the inside of the divider and added a Johnson Rock Gaurd_Bean Saver. Both worth the money.
