I have had a couple of 5488 both 2wd and mfwd and they are a work horse. We pulled a 12r30" planter with no problem and I have pulled a 35' cultivator. They are a good tractor and you shouldnt have any problems. They still use that rear end or quite similar in tractors today. Make sure that you have good tires ex 18.4.42 espically michelins they seem to get the most power to the ground. Good luck

Save your money and go for an early Magnum. 1992 and 1993 7100 models with the easy shift are an excellent tractor and aren't that expensive any more. They are a superior product and have reliability IH only dreamed about having.

Sorry, wouldn't own a Magnum unless someone put a DT466 inplace of that fuel-guzzling 8.3 and put the other door in the cab!

the 3588 is nearly identical to the 6588. the 6588 has the gear shift on the right side of the console, electric shift for the TA and a few minor changes. the big item on either of these is the pivot bearings. these are what allow the tractor to bend in the middle during a turn. check and see if the are wore out. ANY vertical movement in the bearing area means they need replaced. if they need replaced you may have to bore the lower hole to accept a steel sleeve( this is an upgrade and very desireable). a 2+2 will turn shorter then a 5x88 mfd or a magnum mfd. believe me the 2+2 will turn very short. if i can help anymore let me know.

We had a 6788 for four years and have had a 2wd 5488 for two and a half years now. I would say that under heavy pulls a 35_6588 would be comparable to a 5488 mfd and under the right conditions our 6788 would outpull our MX 240 but not by much. The 5488 is nicer to run and I would prefer a 5488 mfd over a 2+2 but finding a good cheap 5488 mfd is next to impossible, I was wanting one but we got our 2wd for less than $12,000 on an auction and for what we use it for we don't really need the MFD. We never really had any complaints with our 6788 but we needed the hydraulic flow and powershift of the 5488 to use on our 24 row 15" bean planter.

Well you will probably spend enough money on hydraulic pumps for the snoopy tractors that you could spend the penneys on fuel for the magnum.
