ofarmer: According to my parts diagram, (that came with my k2 A330) there is a 1_4 x 1 inch woodruff key (partn 905126) in the shaft that the gear slides over. I am guessing that the setscrew just holds things in place. if you would like I think I can scan the pages and send them to you.

After thinking things over while milking, I was afraid that might be the case. How do we go about disassemblingIJ Do you know the size of the set screwIJ Thanks again.

will check again , but a shaft drives these via a double bevel gear. some had splines that hold the gear, some had a keyway. the most common problem is the coupler splines wearing out and the shafts spinning inside the coupler. Tightening a set scew probably will not solve your problem.

The bevel gears and where they mount are fine. The trouble is where the power is transferred to the shaft, to the right of the row unit where the chain driven gear mounts. Sorry my description wasn't clearer. I'm sure now there must be some type of key way that has sheared or come out, along with the set screw. What's the best approachIJ Thanks for your help.

This is black head right.I'm afraid your splined coupler or shaft or both are stripped. The roll drive shaft bearing blocks can get loose and let shaft work in splined coulper or lock collars get loose and let shaft walk in and out eating splines as well.Peek in back side of row unit and watch coupler_shaft to see if they are still friends. If I remember right, there is main driven sprocket on short shaft, then chain coupler_connector(keyedandset screw)then splined coupler which is other half of chain connection. These black heads are not the best designed_engineered in my opinion. You have to keep an eye on stuff and not let anything run loose.I have an early black 4-30 that previous owner just run and ruined every top shaft and coulper.Too costly to fix.

Tip up the center shield between the rows where the drive sprocket for that side is. You will have to remove the coupler chain that drives one row unit and on the other side there is a sliding collar that drives the other row. This sliding collar is held from sliding in with a 5_16" bolt. The easiest way to get this bolt out is to remove the gathering chain drive sprockets and the shield below them to get the bolt out. Once you have this done there are (4) 1_2" bolts that hold the sprocket and bearing mounting plates in place. Once you have these bolts out the drive sprocket, bearings and plates will lift out from above. There is a woodruff key in the drive sprocket. If this is sheared both rows on that side will not run. If one row runs and the other does not then one of the spline couplers or shafts on that row is without splines. It is not a bad job changing these out but the parts are not cheap. Any questions post back as I just rebuilt a A430 this summer. If needed I can look up the prices for the parts.
