Combines 4400 Cylinder Speed Adjustment

Had a 6600 with a comparable setup. Changed the belt once and if memory serves me correctly both the upper and lower chain driven sprockets are attached to a sheave adjusting screw. The upper and lower sheaves adjust in_out inversely to change cylinder speed. Proper timing of the two sheaves is important when you change the belt. The steps for changing the belt and timing the sheaves is listed in the technical manual for your machine. I suggest that you acquire a technical manual. Keep an eye out for one on ebay.

Open the upper sheave completely. Close the lower sheave completely. Put on the timing chains. It will be in "time".

I have the technical manual. I have successfully timed the sheaves before when I changed the secondard countershaft belt so I am familiar with the process. However neither the tecnical manaul nor the parts manual show a diagram of the upper sprocket on the inside and it is unclear how it is attached to the shaft..and I was looking for a little advice in case is was something simple before I open up something with which I am not familar. The last time when I removed the lower chain I simply rotated the lever to fast and the upper sheave closed-doens't appear to be working now. looks like I am going to just have to take the sprocket off to see what is awry.

Give this link a try. Do a "Model Search" for your 4400. Shows three options. One is for a combine. Try section 55 under the sectional index. Does this helpIJ

Section 55-5 is the right section-I just wish I could rotate the picture so I could see the otherside of the gear (part n4). I am 99% sure that is the problem, it was only $24 so I went ahead and ordered one. Until next year I live about 120 miles from the farm so I can't actually pull the one on there until this weekend.

The protrusions inside the upper sprocket were complete gone. Wether that was from just time or is slogging the cylinder spun something I don't know. Anyway, once I replace that it was simply a few minutes to time the cylinder and she is back as good as new. Thanks! PAul
