When the engine was done ,did the head get planed and new flanged head bolts used with the torque turn methodIJIJIJHow was the piston stand out, this is what the compression ring on the headgasket uses to seal the head...was the leak internal or external...blowing out the rad or leaking into the oil panIJIJIJIJ

Had a 466cu.in JD engine in an Australian built Chamberlain 4490 tractor - eqiuv. of JD 4440. It bust head bolts. Noticed one sitting in behind the starter motor, and found another 3 just by putting fingers on all we could reach. When pulled down there were another couple broken. JD reckonned it was not anything they knew about, the engine had done 2500 hrs, but further investigation found that breaking head bolts was reasonably common on 466cu.in JD's. From memory the head gasket was just showing signs of leaking through to the water jacket. Enjoy this forum. Cheers to all.

yes the hed was planed. new bolts were used the ones they call special.and the sleeve height was checked. both times the engine blows water out the raditor

Well it sounds like the job checked out,it might not be a repair failure but maybe a possible overloading of the engine with a shockload ie. plowing a field and stumping out and stalling a hot engine....don't know what the tractor was doing at the time of the failure and I've had fresh headjobs fail by overloads. Cold engine starts with an either-lock can blow a head up here in short order...SASK.CAN last week -55*c with the wind chill...eh..lol

A minus 55 Celsius. Wow. That is a minus 67 Fahrenheit. Did not know it could get that cold any where in the world. Too cold for me, that is for sure.

Sorry adout that I sould explaine,It was minus 43 and a 28mph wind when you add in the wind chill factor you get-55*.The local news crew did a test they threw a cup of water in the air and it froze before it hit the ground.them few days Alaska was warmer than Saskatchewan, this kind of wheather doesn't come along very often...expossed skin can freeze in less than a minute.Temp to day is-9*c and -25*c at night and you wonder wy there is so many Canadian snow birds in the southern stats for the winter...lol.;-)

I'm going out on a limb here, but I am curious if your tractor still has the check valve apparatus on the overflow. If so, I would plug that off, and put a heavier cap on the radiator, I did that on a 7720 combine and that cured the problem.
