My vote is with the Allis rebuild. Should last the life of tractor. Put a little of the money you save away for an injector job every approximatly 1000 hours and plug her in when it's cold and it will go a very long time. little HP pulled from large motor makes it very solid. Either brand of engine has it chance of troubles. Good luck
thanks dan,we're leaning towards a cummins rebuild after talking to previous owner and said he overhauled engine just 2300 hrs ago! our thinking thats way to short a life for a rebuilt engine. john
What is the reason for needing an overhaulIJ That would be my determining factor. Something was not done correctly, it has injested something or heat was excessive. Engine wear comes from lack of lubrication due to starvation, improper clearances, assembly or heat or foreign particles in the oil or intake air.
loss of power, one exhaust temp went to 1200 degrees, other dropped to 800, normal was always @ 1100 when working, then the cignifcant engine knock started. black smoke out the rear turbo, front one was visibly normal.
I claim to be no expert but you could have had valve tran problems or broken lifter preventing valves from opening. If valve don't open you get bad black smoke, this will take a piston out a hurry sometime producing knock. This is what happen to one 305 I know of. One H of a tractor good steering, visablity and seating.
