Combines 550 First Gear

We just replaced the parts in our 510 hydro trans. The parts were from an early 410. The reverse gear wasn't used and the input was different. That tranny is a lot heavier than it loks.

Yes the transmission is too light.THey used this similar transmission on most models through the seventies, even early 750 models. There of course were probably minor changes from year to year. Chech the parts books and compare, or do a visual comparison. We had a box of these things in the shed at work. According to my uncle, they used to repair these transmissions 1-2 times per year in the early days. Got so good at it they could do it in a mudhole in the field - not a fun job.1st gear was always the biggest problem. Haven't had one apart now for 6 years. Tile drainage and common sense have saved these things from failing now for years. Once we got over growing corn in mudholes or just hired a 4WD combine, many of our problems dissapeared.

You may want to check your shifting linkage adjustment. My 510 was doing the same thing. Adjusted linkage so shift rails were completly engaged. Sounds too cheap but solved my problem. When ever the lower traction drive belt is adjusted the linkage should be checked.
