Combines 550 jumping out of 1st gear

Had the same thing happen with our 550. Put two different rebuilt transmissions in it, and still had the same problem. Here's how we fixed it. Take two large creasant wrenches and twist the shift linkage . You have to figure out which way is first gear, and then twist it so it will put it in first further. I found it easier to take the square shift linkage off and twist it because it is hard to twist and only takes a little twist to fix. We sold the combine before we got to use it much after we did that, but for the short time we had it, the combine didn't jump out of gear at all.

Check very carefully at the transmission where the the shift rods go in and out. A lot of times dirt builds up in there and stops the shifter from moving the full travel. Take a flashlight and really look close and I'm hoping this is your problem. Clean it out and you should be good to go again. Good luck! Doc

We had a 510 and 2 differnet 550s do this to us. One thing to do is when you are changing gears, shift slowly. On our 1st 550, we ended up replacing 1st gear, which helped some. We had to rock the shifter several times back and forth between reverse and first to make it stay in. On our 2nd 550, we had a mechanic do some readjustments on the shift linkage. I'm not sure what adjustments he made, but that has so far solved the problem.

On our 550 we had the same trouble. Usually it is just trash build up around the transmisoon casuing it not to go fully in gear. Take a pressure washer and clean it out all around the tranny and that should help u out.
