If you want to chop stalks a little better try pixall kniferolls.it is a pretty good chore getting the old ones off if you don't have a puller.

I just put stalk rolls on my 444 so I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my ability. I have not personally removed a slip clutch, but I understand you have to remove the shaft from the gearbox. I have heard that the knife rolls can be tough on the gearboxes, but maybe someone else can shed some light on this for you. The stalk rolls come off by knocking out two roll pins (one inside the other). A couple of good roll pin punches helps here. These are toward the front of the stalk roll. Then you have to remove two bolts that clamp the stalk roll to the shaft. You can try the puller at this point, but I broke a bolt in the borrowed puller on the first one. I had to take a torch and split each stalk roll and then use the puller to get them off. It was a very tough job. Putting the new ones back on is the reverse and very easy. The low tin header does not have risers on the side and is basically straight from the tip to the top of the outside frame looking at the outside divider. Someone else may be able to offer a better description. The low tin headers are later model. If your rolls are hard to get off you better have at least a couple of days to do the job. bh

I just explained the slip clutch removal to a guy on a 643. Think it should be the same on 644. Click on that green button on left of your screen that says "headers" It will be there.

I put them (pixall kniferolls) on my header 15 years ago.Have never had any trouble out of them. They are getting a little worn on the front part that pulls the stalks in. I run mine on a 2388 so it makes my header a little more agressive since I don't have a variable speed feederhouse.

Thanks for the info. I mispelled considering in my last post so please forgive me and any other words that I mispell. Anyway, I think I will just wait on the knife rolls for next year, seems to be some mixed feelings as in are they worth the money. Also, are they any aftermarket deck plates worth buying because I need them worse than the rollers and might need some type of reel if 'Francis' does'nt pass me by. How about hydrolic deck plates. What is the purpose of themIJ

Pixall kniferolls are expensive, but I think they are worth the cost because they last a long time and are more agressive and you don't have as much header loss. I either hard surface or just buy new deck plates from john deer every few years. Try Kelderman corn reels.I used one a little last year, worked pretty good. saved a lot of headaches and corn. Pretty cheap too. Try www.keldermanmfg.com

They are nice because you can adjust the plate width based on ear size from field to field and even within the field. However, unless you have a newer combine I don't think you will have the controls to drive the deck plate adjustments. Were hydraulic plates even available on the 43_44 series headsIJ Not sure. Unless you farm a lot of ground with varrying hybrids or do custom work I wouldn't get hung up on it.
