Combines 6620 and 3300 questions

Tell you what I'd do. Rip the head off and roll it over by hand. Get yourself some sort of a micrometer and check how high up into the cylinder the other 5 come when on tdc and then when number 1 comes up check it against what the other 5 read. If it rolls over and reads the same then rebuild the head.....check the cylinder in 1 for scratches or dings or anything out of the ordinary..same for the piston.....if all seems in check slap on a new head gasket and rebuilt head and get to using it. Dings and scratches in the piston will not bother and I imagine a dropped valve it's going to have several but as long as the center where the "tip" is that the injectors squirt the fuel to and it helps atomize the fuel more isn't boogered all to hell you should be alright..........Worse case scenario.....Jack up the engine right there in the compartment and pull the pan off and replace liner and piston in number one only. If you find metal chunks then it's just as easy to pull the engine with the head off as if the head's on. Good luck and keep us imformed. I'm curious as to what your going to find. Deerebines

Deerebines, Dad pulled the 3300's head tonight. BTW it has a 219 4 cyl. gasser - anywho, he found the valve stem shoved into the intake manifold, the broken off valve head was still in the chamber and has beat a huge hole in the piston and also dinged the cyl. head up real good. Also when the stem broke off, it punched a nice hole in the piston for a grand total of one gaping and one small hole and when the piston jammed the stem into the manifold, it dented the intake runner and the hole the valve stem is supposed to be in. We have yet to check main and rod brgs., but the piston is at tdc now and comes all to way up to the line where combustion occurs, so that may be good. Anyway, I want to ask some advice from you -- what should we doIJ just try to salvage the thing to a local salvage yard, fix and sell it, or fix and use itIJ A few details on the machine - early model but only 1500 hrs, I believe 3 owners and we bought it in 97' for 4K with head. We now have a 6601, 6620 and 7700 to do our ground with so the 3300 is really obsolete to us and I feel that repairing it will cost more than it's worth to us. Anyway, let me know your .02. later, 95man

Well bud, realize this is just my opinion so take it for what you paid for it. If the other 3 combines will handle the harvest easily and if you take on more ground in the future and they will still handle the ground perhaps just parking the ole girl would be the best bet. I don't know what your labor setup is like but if this combine is down and you got one person standing there playing pocket pool maybe your better off to get it running. Here's some options. Price another used engine from a junkyard and just swap it in for the one that dropped the valve. That might get you by the cheapest and fastest but in the end you are also taking a chance that something might happen to this new one so it's a guessing game there. I have a funny feeling that a rebuilt head...or this head rebuilt....or pulling a good head off of one of these engines at a salvage yard is going to end up costing you as much as if you just bought the entire engine. Your doing the work yourself so you can't really figure a labor bill....That's just part of being a farmer. Now....your still down a piston and liner. I honestly doubt you bent the rod....check your tdc clearances like I told you. This can be done with a straight edge and a cheapy plastic micrometer. If you bent that rod your going to see more than a 2 thousandths difference and the plastic micro gauge will pick it up. If the rods bent...I'd probably just push it into the tree row after I bolted the head back down on it. So I guess what I'm saying is Monday a.m. Find a salvage yard and start pricing. Most of them have 800 numbers or a web site with email so you can get out of them exactly what your looking for. Price a used head.....a rebuilt head.....a used engine. Way the pro's and con's. A 3300 I don't think there is a real great demand for but I did see a pair of 95's sitting on a dealers lot this past week so I could be way off base. Take into account of how much time you are going to be working on it...even though your not getting paid if your like my farm there is always something else that you can be doing. At any rate......Compile the cost's and then figure if you can get that much back out of it before something major goes to hell again. 1500 hours ain't that bad compared to some machines today. As for if you should fix it and sell it.......well.....that just plainly depends on what kind of market you have in your area for them. Check the local classifieds...see how many are out there..see if there's anybody requesting one in that size or close to that size. Do you know of a neighbor that's been wanting oneIJ If your going to have to drop 500 bucks in it and someone will only give you 800 for it then I'd push it in the tree row again and start robbing parts for other projects. We have an 82 massey harris in the tree row that's darned near down to only the frame from all the parts we've robbed for projects we've built of redesigned patents we've done...(surely every farm has thoseIJ!!) That's about all I know to tell you. Your just going to have to decide if you can still do it and easily enough with 3 machines and also if the parts it takes to fix it is worth it. Surely somewhere on the net you can find a dealership that has one listed. Take that price and deduct about 25 percent to 10 percent and you'll get the price that you'd get out of it in trade if your in an area that they'll sell. Good luck......in my operation today It would find a place in the tree row but each farm differs and situations vary and it might be more cost effective for you to just fix it. Oh for crying out loud.....I completely forgot about the liner and piston. If you can find a matched used set..liner and piston...don't be afraid to put it back in that engine and run it. Cobbling to get going and cobbling for the long run is one of my better traits..*grin*....leave the other 3 alone if they are fine and replace liner and piston on number one and you should be good to go. I'm pretty sure those 4 bangers had sleeves in them didn't theyIJ....if not....well, thats a guarantee your going to have to pull an engine and bore it. ONce again....dumping more bucks into it. Just better get all the dollars figured closely from estimates....add 10 percent for overlooked costs and supplies like blue glue and hi-tack and you'll have a pretty good idea what your going to have in it to get going. Man, I hope like hell I didn't confuse you more. Sorry for being so long winded....It's a boring saturday nite and I got carried away. Take care

Deerebines I never got a bite on trying to sell my 4400 gasser. 3300s were few and far between in Indiana. My recommendation would be to donate or possibly sell to the local combine junkyard. I sure wouldn't throw any money at it.

Well I can't use "running beans" as an excuse. We finished up over a week ago.
