Combines 750 engine

The engines are basically the same. I have seen many farmers that irrigate crops use a 750_760 engine as a stationary engine for pumping water with exellent success. Even the AV8.540 from the 760_860! Is the combine is turbo chargedIJ Is your old engine turbo chargedIJ If your 750 isn't turboed then, you have a 372 engine that isn't that great. The bellhousing bolts up to all these engines the same. As far as I know the blocks are drilled and cast the same. The fuel system may need to come off your old engine to make the 750 engine run rite for your application since the combine is fueled differently than industrial applications.

The 6.372 perkins looks like the 354 but it is non turboed. It was used in the combine but wasn't really very reliable. They used oil and fuel usage was poor. It was not as powerful as the 354 often running out of power under a load. It would probably be OK for a lightduty application. All mountings are the same for both engines. like I said, you cannot tell them apart unless it is non turboed or by looking at the engine serial number which is below the injection pump stamped in the block. Unless it has been very well cared for, I would steer clear of it.

I would go along with these comments dont touch the 372 Dont forget to look in the top of the rad for nasties if it does not look nice in there leave it. It is also worth taking the bottom hose off and seeing what come out

I went and looked at the 750 the other day and it does have a 6.372. It starts and runs well. Needed no ether to start.The coolant and oil looked clear. I intend on putting the engine in a wood chipper and parting out the combine. The chipper only requires an 85-100 hp engine so surely the 372 is stout enough for that. My main concern is the availability of an overhaul kit should it need it down the road. They seem scarce for that particular engine. It should more than powerful enough for your intentions. Overhaul kits should be available thru your local Massey dealer. Cat now owns Perkins so, they too should be able to provide you with parts. If this application doesn,t require high rpms then you should be ok. Just remember, they are basically the same as a 354 but. liners were different in them and they had reliability issues. Keep it cooool so it will last longer.

I did some checking and found that kits are only available through Perkins and run around $1600-2000 for the basic kit, almost three times that of the 354. I believe I will hold off and hunt for a 354.Thanks YC

If you must have a Perkins, dont forget the 510 combine. Or 550 combine. They had a non turbo 354 in them. Also the 410 had the 318 4 cyl Perkins that is a wanderful powerplant. Massey used this engine in the 1080_1085 tractor and it was a beast! The 354 in the 550 combine was a black late style engine. They are a little better than the reds but the reds are a good choice. Salvage yards are full of the 510s.

I know this message is old and likely no one will read this but i couldnt help it - I had a 1085 they were a heap of crap - 318 motor the worst I have run - gutless above 1200rpm, heavy on fuel.
