Combines 7580 transmission brake

FIRST pressure test the brake pressure, make sure the piston curcuit is pressurized. I have seen only one or two worn out and that was due to warped clutch discs and trying to overcome this. After that go in through round shifter fork cover plate on rh side. Brake Plate is splined to shaft and accessabel by removing I think 4 or 5 3_8 cap screws which are easily dropped into the tranny....... :-(

I'd have him try a couple things before attempting brake replacement. In the spool that gets pulled rearward when steping on pedal. He will find a hole that he can insert a punch in and help spool rearward while seeing if it will shift without grinding. If this works he will need to find out why spool isn't coming out far enough. Set freeplay at pedal at zero without tractor running. Be sure cable housing isn't spreading. Be sure bushings on fork is not allowing fork to go crooked upon stepping in pedal. Have him start tractor in low low gear to see if tractor wants to move any amount on flat ground. This could help point out warped out clutch pack. It is very rare to have any problem with trans brake but is posible. Be careful about tbran's suggestion on brake replacement for I think he has been sipping that southern moonshine he's been hauling around. The drop box will have to be slid rearward to have half a chance of reaching the brake. I know this can be done on the large 4WD and I think so on the small 4WD also. If problem isn't linkage we will usually start by removing motor to check out clutch. On the outside chance it is not warped clutch we would have to then sneak the transmission out from under the cab to get at trans brake. We have only had a couple brake disks get glazed enough so brake ended up weak. We have also had a couple that the pin that holds brake piston from turning has sheared. With that problem you will only get about half the power from trans brake. These trans brakes are none to powerful in fact on the large 4WD they basically won't stop the normal drag from cold oil in there very large clutch pack. Hope he finds the easy fix. Good luck
