I run my 7720 with the chopper - we also had a 6600 both in corn with the chopper. Knive bar has to be retracted. If you have the time to take it off, it is easier on the machine not to have cobs banging through the hammers. But if you want to no till beans I would think you'd want the chopper running to spread the cobs.
