crawl in there and look up.. all the stuff coming off the walkers gets screwed out right above the front of the shoe. Some guys put steel sheets over this area which gives up a little capacity in order to stop the spearing. Might not help, but if you could slow the cyl, and widen the concave for all it's worth, it might help here since it is because the spears are pretty well chewed up to get that short in the first place. thanks: I know where its coming from,some how I need to get it stopped.When the corn gets dry it breaks off the top and sooner or later it ends up in the grain.looks like hell,do other JD owners have this trouble.If so how can I fix.Its the only real complaint.

As I said, you can cover the first 6" or so up with a steel sheet. This stops the spearing in front, not the rest. You can get the peices from deere. I would rather leave it open because in heavy corn I need all the area I can get. Good luck GS

I have tried the maize guard as its called and like you lost to much capacity.What do the other people do,buy a cleaner for poor combine performance. Thanks

sorry I have been away for a while, Most guys don't look back there, seriously. They just can't take the time to keep it cleaned out. I think I may be the only guy who covers a small enough acreage to be able to do it so I usually clean it out every other day or so. Some varieties of corn are a whole lot better for some reason, but the best yeilders seem to be the worst affenders too. Go figure. I have wondered about putting an air foil chaffer on there but that costs money too.. GS

I just got advice on this form about my 6620 sidehill. I fought it for 15 years John deere makes a kit for them. I just bought one about two months ago they cost around 85 dollars for a 6620 the kit for a 6620 is ah 81271

Don't know about Deere but on my Gleaner when I get spearingI push the combine harder,almost to the point of overloading the shoe seems to help.If you get an air foil,get an adjustable if you run any hills at all,all the non adjustables will do is cough out grain on hillsides,but they do really clean up the sample.

thanks for the comments it seems like some of the deere guys go into hiding when you ask a question that should have been taken care of in engineering.

MAIZE GUARD the part number you gave is called a maize guard.I installed one of these things a few years ago.The problem is you lose to much capacity on hillsides etc.It was better to get the stalks than to lose corn.I was hoping that the jd experts had a cure that didn't lose capacity.

Well sorry I was any help. I'm just getting to old to keep crawling in the back of the combine and cleaning them sieve out. I'm going to try mine now that i have them. Thank for the rest of the info about them.
